PUNE: Shivajinagar received 17.3mm of rain, the highest quantum of convective rainfall in comparison to many other locations in the city and Maharashtra, on Thursday within a span of barely 40 to 45minutes.
Between 8.30am and 5.30pm on Thursday, locations such as Pashan received 1.6mm, while Lohegaon and Lavale received no rainfall. Chinchwad recorded 4mm rain and Magarpatta 1mm during the period.
The intense spell in Shivajinagar caused waterlogging and reduction in visibility for commuters in areas such as JM Road, Bhandarkar Road, F C Road and Karvenagar. A Bhandarkar Road commuter said, "The spell was so intense that I didn't have the time to take out my raincoat after it started raining. I was on my bike and had to reach FC Road. By the time I reached the location, I was drenched."
Thursday's temperatures during the daytime were above 31°C in most locations in Pune, while the relative humidity was also quite high- ranging from 90% to 100%.
Anupam Kashyapi, head of weather forecasting division, IMD, Pune told TOI, "Rainfall during the next two to three days is going to be convective in nature, unlike the evenly spread-out monsoon kind of rainfall. We have thus forecast one-two intense spells, light to moderate rain for the city till October 4."
