The Union Tourism Ministry has unveiled a report revealing that in 2021, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu registered the maximum number of foreign tourist visits with 1.26 million and 1.23 million, respectively.
The report was released by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar during World Tourism Day at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi.
In the report, Tamil Nadu’s Group of Monuments at Mamallapuram was mentioned as the most popular centrally preserved ticketed monument for domestic visitors during the last one year. Taj Mahal in Agra also found its place among the top ten in the list.
The report also said that the number of foreign tourist arrivals during 2021 dropped to 1.52 million, which is almost a 44 per cent decline compared to 2020. The reason behind this drop is Covid-19 related restrictions.
The report said that due to restraints linked with COVID-19, the number of foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in India throughout 2021 dropped to 1.52 million when compared to 2.74 million in 2020, recording an undesirable growth of 44.5 per cent.
India grabbed the 54th spot in the global Travel and Tourism Development Index in 2021. During the occasion, Dhankar also gave away the National Tourism Awards 2018-19. The annual ceremony was postponed in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
