Administration, Muslim leaders hold meeting
Coimbatore: In view of the tense situation prevailing in the district following the ban on Popular Front of India (PFI) and affiliated organisations, collector G S Sameeran and city police commissioner V Balakrishnan conducted a meeting with Coimbatore District United Jamaat leaders at the collectorate on Thursday, and sought their help to maintain peace and communal harmony.
A Jamaat leader promised to help police, but requested them to spare the innocent. “More than 50 police personnel visited Pillayarpuram near Podanur to pick up a suspect, sparking tension in the area. Following inquiry, he was proven innocent and was released. If police suspect a person, send one or two cops to take him to the station for questioning. Otherwise, the society will treat him as a criminal, which will affect his job prospects,” he said.
The Jamaat will cooperate with the district administration and police to maintain peace and communal harmony, said general secretary of Coimbatore District United Jamaat C T C Jabbar. “We urged the officials not to allow RSS conduct a procession on October 2. Otherwise, it would escalate the present situation,” he said.
As many as 70 leaders from various Jamaats participated in the meeting.
