Satyapal MalikMeghalaya Governor Satyapal Malik will address a farmers’ meet at Uttar Pradesh’s Shamli on October 3. While Malik has been a vocal critic of the Centre, particularly on the issue of farmers, his upcoming engagement is bound to turn heads as he will share the dais at the event with Rashtriya Lok Dal president and Rajya Sabha MP Jayant Chaudhary. Notably, the RLD’s social media channels are highlighting the fact that Malik will be on the same stage as Chaudhary. In May, Malik had stayed away from a joint meeting of the Opposition, hosted by the RLD, citing health issues.

AS THE uncertainty over who all – apart from Digvijaya Singh and Shashi Tharoor – will file nominations for the Congress presidential elections on Friday, party leaders were amused to know that a leader from Jharkhand too collected nomination forms on Thursday. Former minister K N Tripathi collected the papers with, what some leaders say, an intention to contest. Tripathi had hogged the headlines for the wrong reasons during the Assembly elections in 2019. The Congress candidate from Daltonganj, he was detained by police for brandishing a pistol outside a polling booth. Tripathi then claimed that he took out the pistol in self-defence after BJP workers pelted him and his supporters with stones when he reached the booth after hearing reports of rigging.

A SUPREME Court hearing on passive euthanasia saw the bench and counsel engage in some philosophical talk on death on Thursday. Justice Hrishikesh Roy, who was part of the five-judge Constitution bench, said the Hollywood drama “Whose life is it anyway” may be an interesting movie to watch during the vacations (the court has Dussehra holidays between October 3 and October 8) in the context of the debate. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said the Jains have the highest form of detachment in their system. He said 20th century philosopher Bertrand Russell, too, had written on suicide. Justice K M Joseph was of the view that many of those who took their lives could have been saved by counseling. Mehta said the shrinking of the family was also a contributory factor to the absence of a support system. Earlier, someone in the larger family would take care, but now people have thousands of friends online, but may not know who the neighbour is, he said.
