Mumbai Maharashtra news live updates, September 29: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Thursday predicted light drizzles in Mumbai till the end of this week and said there is no sign of monsoon retreat from most parts of the city. The city in the past two weeks received light rain and the showers receded this week.

In other news, NCP president Sharad Pawar’s one state tour is enough for opposition to return to power in Maharashtra, said daughter, and NCP ( MP) Supriya Sule. “In his long 55 years political career Sharad Pawar saw power for 27 years and equal 27 years in the role of opposition. But I always believe and tell Maharashtra has given him abundance love and respect,” she said. “In 2019, nobody believed Maha Vikas Aghadi would come to power. Every day we woke up with news that some NCP leader has defected to BJP. Many predicted the end of opposition,” Sule said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra DGP Rajnish Seth on Wednesday directed police personnel across the state to seal the offices of Popular Front of India (PFI) and freeze their bank accounts. The PFI was banned by the Union government earlier in the day following days of raids and arrests of people linked to the outfit.

India’s highest cable-stayed road bridge is being constructed in Maharashtra as a part of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway Missing Link project. This 132 metres-high bridge is being constructed by Afcons. The Missing Link Project will bypass the Khandala Ghat section and will reduce the distance of the expressway by over six kilometres, reducing travel time by more than 25 minutes. Read more

Maha Finger Print Bureau bags 1st prize for smart use of fingerprint science in Sakinaka rape-murder case

Traffickers using ‘black cocaine’ to avoid being caught by sniffer dogs: NCB

In order to ensure that sniffer dogs at airports are not able to detect cocaine, ‘black cocaine’ is being used by drug peddlers coming to India from South American countries which neutralises the smell of cocaine so that it can pass through checkpoints easily.

14 years on, Malegaon blast case trial still underway

Fourteen years after a blast in Maharashtra’s Malegaon town claimed six lives and injured more than 100 people, the trial in the case is still going on before a special NIA court here and more than witnesses are yet to be examined while 26 have turned hostile.

Seven persons, including BJP MP Prgaya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit, are facing trial in the case, which is being probed by the National Investigation Agency, and have been charged under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Read more

BJP starts cleaning drive of 100 statues, including those of Chhatrapati Shivaji, Vinayak Savarkar

The party will clean 100 statues shortlisted across Mumbai. The cleanliness drive is part of "fortnight service" campaign to commemorate the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. BEST to offer E-bike service at 180 bus stops from this October

The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will roll out of their E-Bikes services for first and last mile connectivity across the city. 1,000 E-Bikes will be deployed this October at 180 bus stops, commercial, and residential areas. Passengers alighting from buses can use E-Bikes to travel to their destination and back. E-Bikes can be picked up and dropped off at any E-Bike station.

WR's new suburban train timetable to be effective from Oct 1: More AC, 15-coach services

Western Railway's revised timetable for Mumbai's suburban network will come into force from October 1, the highlight being the introduction of 12 conventional and 31 air-conditioned services as well as extension of 50 services, an official said on Thursday.

Terming it a "festival bonanza for commuters", a WR release said the number of services on the network will increase from 1,375 to 1,383, including 112 services on Harbour Line, whose operation is helmed by Central Railway but a segment runs from Mahim to Goregaon. (PTI)

Maha govt announces additional aid of Rs 755 crore for crop losses due to rain

More than six lakh farmers in the state who lost crops due to heavy rains but were not eligible for aid under the existing criteria will get financial assistance of Rs 755 crore, the Maharashtra government said.

All three stations will have a spacious roof plaza along with spaces for retail outlets, cafeterias, and recreational facilities, among others.

The Union Cabinet approved the proposal of the Indian Railways to redevelop three major railway stations, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) in Mumbai, at an estimated cost of Rs 10,000 crore. The cabinet informed in a press release that all three stations will have a spacious roof plaza along with spaces for retail outlets, cafeterias, and recreational facilities, among others.

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will impose fines on organising committees of Navratri events this year if they are found damaging roads, including pothole formation, while setting up pandals and barricades in Mumbai.

In other news, a special court was informed that NCP leader Nawab Malik’s health has deteriorated and his kidney has been affected. This was mentioned in a reply filed on behalf of Malik before the court on an application filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seeking that a medical board be constituted to verify his health status, as he has been admitted to a private hospital since May.
