The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a proposal for a railway station redevelopment plan to transform around 199 railway stations in India, including the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in New Delhi, Ahmedabad and Mumbai, at an estimated cost of over Rs 10,000 crore.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told during a conversation with the media that the plan of redevelopment of railway stations is related to the spirit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that the government has focused on every aspect of the railways, including the safety, convenience and technology of the passengers.

Vaishnaw informed that the Union Cabinet has approved the proposal of Indian Railways for redevelopment of three major railway stations (New Delhi, Ahmedabad and CSMT Mumbai). The project involves an investment of about Rs 10,000 crore.

He informed that New Delhi railway station will integrate train services with buses, auto and metro rail services. The redesign of Ahmedabad railway station is inspired by the Sun Temple of Modera. The heritage building of CSMT will not be touched, but the surrounding buildings will be redeveloped.

The railway minister said that work is underway on the proposal for redevelopment of 199 railway stations in India. Out of these, tender has been issued for the work of 47 stations and work has started at 32 railway stations. Vaishnaw said that under this, 'roof plaza' will be built at these stations. The roof plaza will have a food court, a small play area for young children, a place to sell local products, etc. Special attention will be given to cleanliness here and full care will be taken for the convenience of the handicapped.
