No garbage pick-up since 2 weeks from Sadar school
Nagpur: In what has turned into a major health hazard, garbage continues to pile up at a city school with the principal claiming that no collection van has come since last two weeks. The garbage dump beside SFS High School (Sadar) playground is now overflowing, with students right from kindergarten level playing in the vicinity.
Fr Prashant, principal of the school, said, “I have contacted the authorities multiple times but nobody has come to pick up the garbage yet. We are not aware what exactly is the reason they refuse to come.”
TOI tried to get in touch with the officials concerned from Mangalwari zone, but received no response.
A parent from the school, who did not want to identified, said, “That garbage dump has started to stink now. We enter from here to pick up our kids, and the foul smell emitted is a problem for all of us.”
He added that the overflowing garbage dump is a health hazard. “Apart from the mosquito menace, since water puddles have formed near it, there is always a danger of snakes being in the vicinity. Sometimes stray dogs may also sneak into the campus to grab food from this dump, and may attack our kids. NMC must act immediately and clear it off,” said the parent.
Former corporator Rajesh Mate says some NMC officials are purposely not picking up garbage. “I have got inside information that a particular officer in Mangalwari zone is preventing the clean-up operation. It’s a common practice to target establishments, for money, by doing such things. I have told them to clean this place else we will hold a protest,” said Mate.
