In tourism tax collection, Duluth council to think of the way

For tourism tax assistance, the city officials got so many requests that the combined cost of getting them completed would surpass the total of 2023 expected collections by over $2 million.

Noah Schuchman, Duluth’s chief administrative officer, said that there are requests that far outdo their capacity to finance everything. Therefore, their aim is on looking for the greatest bang for their tourism and making sure that they are working to help the main entities that have wide and far reaches and then also to work to guarantee that they are maximizing the use of that money.

The Duluth City Council, on Monday, is scheduled to think on Mayor Emily Larson’s recommendation as to the way to divvy up $13.3 million in tourism tax proceeds, on the basis of an assessment procedure adopted under her leadership four years ago.

She said that the process that she puts in place is to where people apply. They have to report on what they do. For tourism, they’ll have to make the case. They have to consider their budget. They have to see their target statement. And these are recommendations that she does consider that they’ve thoughtfully reviewed and gone over.

However, Janet Kennedy, 5th District councilor, declared at a Thursday night agenda meeting that she means to table the resolution to let more time to consider the proposed distribution plan.
