GURUGRAM: Armed with stones and belts, three men allegedly barged into a café in DLF-2 late on Saturday night, abusing and assaulting its owner and staff — apparently as retaliation for chiding them after the trio harassed some women a few days ago.
Police said on Monday that the three men — Deepak, Amit, and Jitendar, all of them from Gurugram — have been arrested. They were accompanied by a fourth friend, Bharat, who stood by when the incident took place.
The 32-year-old owner said in his complaint that the four entered his café around 11.57pm on Saturday.
“They started abusing me and my staff. Then they slapped me, hit me with the belt and even threatened to kill me. The customers at the café, including a 2-year-old girl, were terrified,” the 32-year-old owner said, adding that he has some injuries to his face, back and hands.
He alleged that the miscreants were retaliating because, earlier in the week, he had called out the four men who were drunk and harassing some women outside his café. “Women come to our café because it is non-alcoholic and safe. On Thursday, three women were celebrating a birthday. When they went outside, the men started honking and asked them to sit in their car. That’s when I asked the men to leave and not stop outside,” the owner said.
Based on the complaint at DLF-2 police station, the accused have been booked under IPC sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 34 (common Intention), and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) of the IPC. Police said it appears the accused were drunk at the time. “We are investigating,” said Satender, SHO.
On Monday, the owner also alleged that police did not take action despite being informed that drunk men were gathering near the cafe. “I will wrap up operations if the safety of my customers is at risk,” he said.
