Mysuru tribes present honey, sari and wooden jumbo to Prez
Mysuru: It was a red-letter day for a group of tribal community leaders from Mysuru’s Periyapatna, Hunsur, and HD Kote taluk as they got an opportunity to meet President Droupadi Murmu, also a tribal, and interact with her on Monday.
They interacted with India’s first tribal President Murmu for nearly 10 minutes soon after Dasara celebration was inaugurated by the latter, atop the Chamundi Hills.
Veena, Janakamma, Poovi, Soni and Nandakumar and Kalakalkar and others said they are ecstatic as one of their own has occupied the top Constitutional post.
On the occasion, they presented President Murmu with a Mysuru silk sari, locally extracted honey by the tribal farmers’ producers’ group and a wooden elephant. Poovi said tribals are fond of green and yellow colour and hence they gave her a green saree with a yellow border.
The tribals, during their meeting at a temporary shelter created for the purpose, gave a list of demands including listing the Betta Kuruba community as primitive tribes and providing separate reservations and systematic implementation of the Forest Rights Act 2006.
Veena of Nagapura block said she urged the President to ensure quality education for children of tribal communities studying in Ashram school, appoint trained and qualified teachers, and to encourage entrepreneurial training for tribal women.
