Varanasi: A dreaded looter was arrested after an encounter with the police near Khutahan culvert on Sanjarpur-Kiriyari road under Saraimir police station in Azamgarh district on Sunday.
He suffered bullet injuries during the exchange of fire.
He was identified as Alok Pandey of Chakia area under Rani ki Sarai police station.
Police recovered a country made revolver, live cartridges, a motorcycle, driving license, two ATM cards and other articles from him.
Additional SP (rural) Azamgarh Siddharth said: “A bike-borne youth Alok Pandey tried to dodge Saraimir police officials during a checking drive. On asking him to stop, Pandey opened indiscriminate fire and suffered bullet injuries in his leg when the police too opened fire in defence.”
Police rushed him to district hospital.
During initial interrogation, Pandey confessed that he and his gang members had committed five loots in different areas in Azamgarh and Ambedkar Nagar districts between September 17 and 21. Five members of his gang were arrested on Saturday.
