A video of as many as seven shanties collapsing and falling in an adjoining nullah located at the Indra Nagar area in Mumbai’s Vile Parle has come to the fore. No injuries were reported in the incident and more than 24 hutments were vacated.

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials said the residents are shifted to the Ashram BMC School.

Officials said more than 30 shanties in the area suffered damage on Sunday night, apparently due to the strong vibrations caused by the ongoing Metro rail work. While portions of seven shanties fell in an adjoining nullah, more than 30 other such structures caved in, he said.

"After the incident, two fire engines were rushed to the spot. At least 24 adjoining shanties were vacated and the residents were shifted to a civic-run school. They were provided with food and water," the official said.

Raju Devendra, a local resident said, "The incident occurred due to the strong vibrations caused by the ongoing Metro work. After the damage to the hutments, local residents forced the work to be stopped. Luckily, nobody suffered a major injury."

Around 180 huts were built near the drain. However, BMC workers used to remove the soil while cleaning the nullah. The affected people have demanded government action at the earliest.

Locals said the incident took place around 8.30 pm. Former corporator Rajesh Mehta said all affected people were shifted to a BMC school.

BMC officials will discuss the rehabilitation of the residents today, he said.
