This festival, Silchar looks beyond floods & post-Covid hardships
Silchar: Silchar, the second largest city in Assam after Guwahati, is all set to celebrate Durga Puja that is less than a week away. Braving the rain, the city observed Mahalaya on Sunday, when thousands of devotees thronged Sadarghat bridge over Barak river here to pay obeisance to their ancestors.
Police and the administration had taken precautionary measures to control the crowd on Mahalaya morning on Sadarghat bridge and adjoining Sadarghat and Rongpur localities of the town, said an official on Saturday.
However, incessant rain across the valley throughout the day disrupted Puja reparations in Silchar, Karimganj, Hailakandi and other towns. “There has been a delay in pandal construction and in giving finishing touches to the Durga idol,” said a functionary of Public School Road Sarbojonin Puja Committee.
