The family of Moses Kadiege, the principal of HL Setlalentoa Secondary School in Ga-Rankuwa, says his face was swollen and there was not much blood where his body was found in Winterveldt on Sunday.
"The police told the family they mustn't touch the body because they were conducting a forensic investigation.
"From what I've heard, there was not much blood on his body, but he was swollen on his head, lips, and right eye. As they explained, it looked like he was beaten on his face," family spokesperson Ernest Hlungwane told News24.
Kadiege, 56, left his home in Brits on Saturday morning to visit friends and never returned. His body was found in Winterveldt on Sunday morning.
Hlungwane said the family had filed a missing person's report with the police and sent out a WhatsApp voice note appealing for help locating him.
"That was when the police connected the dots to say, 'this must be the missing person'. After [receiving a photo from the family], they confirmed that it was him," he added.
The family joined Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi who visited the school on Monday.
Hlungwane said Lesufi lamented "the killings of productive members of society" and called on police to investigate the case speedily to ensure justice for Kadiege and his family.
Lesufi conveyed his condolences to the family, saying the affected people would receive counselling from the education department's psychosocial unit.
"We are disheartened by the untimely death of our revered principal, and we wish to convey our sincerest condolences to the school community and his beloved family."
Police spokesperson Dimakatso Sello told News24 earlier the authorities were investigating a murder case. She said the motive for the murder was unknown.
