All beaches in Plettenberg Bay have been closed after a woman was killed in a shark attack at central beach on Sunday morning, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
This is the second fatal shark attack in Plettenberg Bay in three months.
NSRI crews and the police were dispatched to the beach at 07:53.
NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said:
He added that the police took the body into their care, together with the provincial health department's forensic pathology services.
Police have opened an inquest docket.
Bitou municipal spokesperson Andile Namntu said that the council in May approved research on the shark barrier at the central beach.
Namntu added:
Bitou Municipality has also established a shark committee to work with experienced private sector personnel to assist with limiting such incidents.
In June, local businessman Bruce Wolov was killed by a shark at sanctuary beach.
His body was located and recovered from the water, at the back surf line, onto an NSRI rescue craft.
At the time, the body was brought to the NSRI Plettenberg Bay rescue station. However, he was declared dead by a doctor.
