New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid rich tributes to freedom fighters in his monthly 'Mann ki Baat' address on Sunday and announced that the Chandigarh airport will be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary that falls on September 28.
The day also marks the anniversary of the surgical strike by the armed forces against terrorist training camps inside Pakistani territory.
"Just before the birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh, an important decision has been taken as a tribute to him. It has been decided that the Chandigarh airport will now be named after Shaheed Bhagat Singh. It had been waiting for a long time. I congratulate the people of Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana and of the entire country for this decision," Modi said.
The PM also asked people to support children suffering from physical challenges, especially those who cannot speak or hear, and diseases like Down's Syndrome. He also mentioned some cases where such kids have overcome these challenges and become examples worth emulating.
The PM referred to the installation of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's statue on Kartavya Path, insisting that naming of institutions and places and building memorials on martyrs helps in imbibing a sense of duty among citizens. Modi said September 28 is also the day when the surgical strike was carried out in 2016 at militant launch pads in Pakistan.
He also recalled the ideology and thoughts of BJP leader Deen Dayal Upadhyaya on his birth anniversary. "Deendayalji taught us how Indian philosophy can guide the world even in the modern, social and political perspective," Modi said.
