COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore police arrested a functionary and member of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Sunday evening for hurling a molotov cocktail at the residence of BJP functionary at Kuniyamuthur and pouring petrol on a car and set the car on fire at Kuniyamuthur on Friday.
The arrested persons were identified as S Jesuraj, 33 from Arivozhi Nagar at Madukkarai and A Iliyas, 38 from Thiruvalluvar Nagar at Kuniyamuthur in Coimbatore city. Jesuraj is the SDPI president for 87th ward in Coimbatore city and Iliyas is a member of SDPI.
The duo poured petrol on a car belonging to Hindu Munnani functionary S Thiyagu, 35 from Muthsamy Servai street at Kuniyamuthur on Friday afternoon. They set the car on fire and managed to escape from the spot. The family members and neighbours rushed to the spot and put off the fire. Kuniyamuthur police registered a case against the Jesuraj and Iliyas under sections 153 (A) and 435 of the Indian Penal Code and section 3 of the Explosive Substances act.
The duo hurled a Molotov cocktail at the residence of BJP functionary Bharath at Subbulakshmi Nagar in Kuniyamuthur around 11 pm on Friday. They were booked under sections 153 (A), 436 of IPC and section of 3 of the Explosives Substances Act.
“Based on the intelligence collection, CCTV footage, and technical investigation, our police teams arrested the two SDPI members on Sunday evening. They will be sent to judicial custody. We are also nearing the two suspects who hurled the Molotov cocktail outside the BJP office and a cloth merchant shop in Oppanakara Street in Coimbatore city on Thursday. We have deployed enough police force in Coimbatore city and the city is under control and peaceful. People no need to fear and panic,” said V Balakrishnan, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore city.
The Coimbatore city had reported five hurling of Molotov cocktails and setting a car on fire on Thursday and Friday nights and stone pelting incidents on two TNSTC town buses reported in Coimbatore city.
Normalcy is back
The normalcy is back in Coimbatore city and the routine life is not affected. Around 3,500 police personnel were deployed across the Coimbatore city from Saturday morning and the police intensified vehicle checks. TOI visited Podanur, Sundarapuram junction and the police stopped mostly two-wheeler riders and verified the documents from the bike riders. Additional Director General of Police (law&order) Thamaraikannan has been camping in the city from Friday evening.
