Kanpur: A meeting of the ‘expert committee for sugar Standards’, constituted by the Government of India, was held at the National Sugar Institute (NSI) on Friday. It was headed by director, NSI, Prof Narendra Mohan, Director.
The expert committee finalized the sugar standards for the sugar season- 2022-23 commencing from October. Representatives from the ministry of consumer affairs, food and public distribution, Indian Sugar Mills Association, Sugar Technologists Association of India and Bureau of Sugar Standards attended the meeting. Every sugar producer in the country will have to procure grades from National Sugar Institute, Kanpur for marking their sugar on packs as L-31, L-30, M-31, M-30, S-31, S-30 and SS-31. While L,M,S and SS denote grain size as large, medium, small and super small, 31 & 30 indicates colour, 31 being the superior white.
“The committee also decided to introduce a new standard in 32 colour series keeping in view the improvement in quality of sugar in the country over the years”, said Prof Narendra Mohan. tnn
