Mysuru: After back-to-back chain snatching incidents in Mysuru recently, the city police have launched special beats — at the break of dawn and during the evening hours — to check robberies.
This has helped cops nab criminals involved in robberies, and also other crimes like vehicle thefts. Ahead of the festive season, patrolling has been intensified in Mysuru.
Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Geetha Prasanna, said ‘Shubhodaya,’ a special beat during early morning hours to prevent chain snatchers from targeting lone women, has yielded the best results. “We were able to nab chain snatchers, vehicle lifters, and thieves too. Two gangs of chain snatching are now in police custody and an investigation is under progress. The details of the crimes they have committed would be revealed soon,” he said.
Recently, three vehicle lifters were arrested and city police could solved five vehicle thefts. All these accused were arrested by the personnel deputed on early morning duties. Police would detain persons suspiciously roaming during the early morning hours and also during the dusk.
Shubhodaya is a special beat conducted by city police at respective police stations under which they would depute one or two officers at selected points where public venture out on foot to fetch milk, and other provisions. The officers keep eye on youths on two-wheelers roaming suspiciously and tip-off the patrolling team and fellow personnel on duty and then detain them for questioning.
Geetha Prasanna explained that apart from morning beats, evening beats are also conducted. “These special arrangements are apart from regular beats and patrolling to ensure the safety of the public,” she added.
An officer claimed that sometime back, chain snatchers had targeted lone women on evening stroll, especially late in the evening, and had robbed them of their gold chains.
“So, to ensure that the beats are frequent, separate teams were formed for every assignment and it really worked as we were able to crack many crimes,” he said.
