Brace for traffic congestion near Laxmi Mandir Tiraha

JAIPUR: Laxmi Mandir Tiraha in the city will witness traffic snarls once Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) starts work on expanding the underpass below the Tonk Road flyover.
The widening of the underpass, to be undertaken as a part of the signal-free traffic project, is expected to start in January and would be completed within the stipulated dateline of June 2023, said officials.
“For the underpass widening project, land from the Indian Oil Corporation depot adjacent to the underpass has to be acquired. Since traffic from at least three directions converges on both sides of this underpass, we must be very careful during the construction work,” said a senior JDA official.
According to the project blueprint, vehicles from the Nehru Bal Udyan side heading towards Sahakar Marg will not be allowed to take a right turn from Laxmi Mandir Tiraha. Vehicles moving towards Sahakar Marg will have to move straight along the road adjacent to the flyover, take a U-turn through the underpass towards the Tiraha and then take left turn from the Tiraha. At present, vehicles from JL Nehru Marg, Barkat Nagar and Gandhi Nagar railway station use both sides of this underpass.
“It is a challenge for us to maintain traffic when construction work for widening of the underpass starts. However, we would coordinate with the traffic department as and when required,” added the official.
JDA is already constructing an underpass near Nehru Bal Udyan on Tonk Road under this project. Once this underpass is in operation, traffic on Sahakar Marg heading for the Tonk Road flyover need not reach Laxmi Mandir Tiraha. Instead, the vehicles would take a left turn on the road just before Sabji Mandi to reach Tonk Road near Nehru Bal Udyan and then take a right run through this underpass.
“Laxmi Mandir Tiraha is a T-shaped crossing, and we plan to make it free from traffic signals. There will simply be no right turn there. Widening of the underpass below the flyover and construction of the underpass near Nehru Bal Udyan would ensure this,” said a JDA engineer.
