Mechanisation boon for cane farmers
Coimbatore: Mechanisation of sugarcane cultivation will increase profit earned by farmers, said G Hemaprabha, the director of ICAR Sugarcane Institute Coimbatore.
Addressing at CaneFest 2022, a two-day exhibition, in the city on Friday, Hemaprabha said per hectare cultivation of sugarcane on average costs 2 lakh in Tamil Nadu, which is the highest in the country. “Manual harvesting brings down profit earned by farmers. Farmers have to spend 800-900 for harvesting per tonne of crop, while the market price of sugarcane is 3,000 per tonne.”
Around 50 stalls were put up in the expo. Earlier, the expo was inaugurated by vice-chancellor of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University V Geethalakshmi. tnn
