Man kills live-in partner in Bhiwandi, held

A 24-year-old woman was allegedly strangled to death by her live-in partner, who was nabbed while transporting the body in an ambulance in Bhiwandi town of Maharashtra's Thane district, police said on Saturday. The police have arrested Saddam Sharif Sayyed (30), a resident of Kalyan, for allegedly killing his girlfriend Kavita Ramappa Madar (24). (PTI)

Raigad: Bid to blow up ATM kiosk foiled, 1 held

The Pen police in Raigad foiled a robbery attempt at a Bank of India ATM machine in Kamarli village by nabbing one of the two robbers, who had brought gelatin sticks and a detonator to blow up the cash vault of the ATM kiosk and decamp with the money.The robbers had also brought a jammer device to block the transmission of the ATM machine's security breach alarm,but it did not function and the alert message was received by the bank manager, who in turn alerted the Pen police. The incident occurred on September 22 at around 3am.

‘Omicron subvariant BA.2.75 dominant strain in state’

The ongoing genome sequencing surveillance of the Covid-causing SARS-CoV-2 virus across the state revealed that the BA. 2. 75 subvariant has become the dominant strain.“Earlier Omicron’s BA. 5 variant was the dominant one, but it seems to be reducing,” said state surveillance officer DrPradip Awate.In the first fortnight of September, genome sequencing done in the seven designated labs showed BA. 2. 75 subvariant in 486 patients. Its tally has thus increased to 1,161 so far, with Pune (512), Mumbai (393) and Nagpur (154) having the most cases. The state tally for cases ofBA. 4 and BA. 5 stand at 369 in comparison, according to data distributed by the state public health department on Thursday. A week back, the BMC released genome sequencing data to show that Omicron subvariant BA. 2. 75 was mutating further into subtypes BA. 2. 75. 1 and BA. 2. 75. 2.

HC puts law and order onus on Uddhav’s Sena

The Bombay HC on Friday allowed the Uddhav Thackeray-led Sena’s two applications made on August 22 and 26 for holding the Dussehra rally at Shivaji Park on October 5 and for preparations from October 2 to 6 by following conditions laid down in a January 20, 2016 GR. It said Sena will maintain law and order while holding the ‘Dussehra Melawa’. If the petitioners are found responsible for law and order situation or violation of conditions, “the same would be the ground while considering the application, if any, that would be made by the petitioners in future”, the judges said. The BMC has been directed to grant permission to Sena by 11am on September 26. The Shivaji Park police station is at liberty to take a video recording of the function at the cost of Sena, the court said.
