Synopsis

The Rail, Maritime, and Transport (RMT) workers will go on strike as their negotiations with the government haven’t been fruitful. The demands are related to unacceptable working conditions and poor pay scales, which the major corporations have failed to address.

The rail strike crisis in the United Kingdom continues to pile up as rail workers plan to walk out on October 8. Media reports show that the RMT unions have announced a nationwide strike, which is expected to bring rail services in Britain to a complete standstill for the first two weekends in October.

Around 40,000 members of the railway network and 15 major railway companies will go on strike for 24 hours on October 8. The strike is scheduled during the Conservative conference, which will also see the Aslef union drivers walking out. Aslef drivers will also conduct a strike on October 5.

The reason behind the new strike is the long-standing dispute between the workers and the railway companies over working conditions and pay scale. The situation continued to escalate as the government’s efforts to crack down on negotiations between the companies and the workers couldn’t succeed. Rail, Maritime, and Transport (RMT) General Secretary, Mick Lynch, said in a statement that though the union welcomes the government’s steps to approach them, there hasn’t been any offer compelling enough to call off the strike.

Biggest rail strike

Rush-hour commuters in the UK faced chaos today as railway workers began the network's biggest strike action in more than three decades, with a cost-of-living crisis threatening wider industrial action.

A Network Rail spokesperson said that they had received a notification for another strike on October 8, which the RMT was carrying out in tandem with Aslef drivers. The network added that the two strikes planned for October would severely hurt passengers and asked commuters to step out during the strikes only if necessary. The spokesperson confirmed that a revised timetable would also be released a few days before the strike.
