Bollywood actress Tanushree Dutta recently claimed that several attempts were made to kill her after she spoke out against sexual harassment in the film industry.

In a recent interview, the ‘Aashiq Banaya Aapne’ star revealed that the brakes of her car were tampered with several times when she was at Ujjain in May 2022. This resulted in a nasty accident while she was on her way to the Mahakaal Temple. “I met with an accident, a very bad accident. I was just short of breaking some bones. It set me back for a couple of months, and it took me time to heal from those injuries as there was a lot of blood loss, “ the actress was quoted as saying, in an interview with Connect FM Canada.

The ‘Chocolate: Deep Dark Secrets’ actress shared that there were multiple attempts to poison her as well. A domestic help reportedly tried to poison her water. “There was a maid, who was, in my words, planted in my house and I just progressively fell sick. I suspect that there was something being mixed in my water,” she disclosed.

Earlier this year (in July) the former Miss India had also claimed that her comeback attempts were being systematically sabotaged. In an explosive Instagram Post, the ‘Bhagam Bhag’ actress wrote, “The Bollywood mafia, the old political circuit of Maharashtra (which still has influence here), and nefarious anti-national criminal elements together usually operate like this to trouble people. I am very sure the #metoo culprits & the NGO who I exposed, are all behind this, because why else would I be harassed like this?”

The ‘Dhol’ actress is often credited as the pioneer of India’s #MeToo movement. After she opened up about being sexually harrassed by co-star Nana Patekar, on the sets of the 2009 film ‘Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss’, during an interview with Zoom TV in 2018, many women from various walks of life came out with their stories of being harassed by people in power.

From Bollywood, actress Sandhya Mridul and writer-director Vinta Nanda, came out with their own stories of suffering sexual abuse. Nanda claimed that she had been molested by the ‘Hum Aapke Hain Kaun…!’ actor Alok Nath while working with him in the 90s. Mridul revealed he had come on to her during a shoot.

Bollywood starlet Saloni Chopra opened up to being harassed by director Sajid Khan. The actress revealed that the director of the ‘Houseful’ series often made lewd comments towards her when she was working with him as an assistant director in 2011. She described her time working with the 'Hey Babyy' director as "the most awful experience in my life."

2018: The Year Of #MeToo In India

2018 saw the rise of the #MeToo movement in India. Inspired by a global campaign against sexual harassment and assault, women across the spectrum opened up and shared their stories about abuse by men in positions of power. And it began in October with actress Tanushree Dutta accusing actor Nana Patekar of sexual harassment while shooting for the 2008 film 'Horn Ok Please'.

What followed was a series of posts by other women who shared their experiences with the world. From actors, film directors to advertising top guns, artists and writers and politicians, women professionals called out obnoxious behaviour at the workplace. From unwanted attention in the office to sexual innuendos on the film set, there were many kinds of allegations that surfaced.

While some of these are still struggling in the industry amidst the allegations, some succeeded in getting a clean chit from authorities. Recently, rumours surfaced that Patekar has been given a clean chit. However, the 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne' actress quashed the rumours. However, director Vikas Bahl, who was one of the prime accusees, has been set free from all charges against him. The internal complaints committee of Reliance Entertainment, today, set the 'Queen' director free, who was accused by an employee of Phantom films under the #MeToo movement.
