Amazon India has expanded its four-hour delivery offering for prime members to over 50 cities and towns across the country, up from 14 last year.
The service will be available in Surat, Mysuru, Mangalore, Bhopal, Anantapur, Warangal, Ghaziabad, Nashik, Faridabad, Nellore and Patna among cities for categories such as toys, kitchen appliances, wireless, consumer electronics, media and books.
Amazon’s announcement follows the rapid growth of e-commerce and quick commerce startups, Flipkart, Zomato’s Blinkit, Swiggy’s Instamart, Zepto and Dunzo, promising deliveries within minutes to acquire customers.
Amazon’s rival Flipkart had launched Flipkart Quick in 2020 in Bengaluru, and subsequently expanded it to 14 cities including Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Pune in 2021.
It allows consumers to order online and get delivery 90 minutes or book a two-hour slot for electronics, groceries, snacks and mobile phones.
Amazon introduced same-day delivery in India in 2017 as part of its prime membership, its loyalty programme.
For the four-hour delivery, it uses strategically-located centres covering different parts of a city to optimize faster delivery.
“We’re able to do so by storing items in specialized buildings close to customer location and enabling our delivery network to be in close proximity to customers and Prime members. Same-day delivery also provides job opportunities for associates, especially since the locations are within the city," Abhinav Singh, director, customer fulfilment, supply chain and Amazon Transportation Services, Amazon India, pointed out.
Quick commerce in India is set to breach $5.5 billion by 2025, RedSeer said in a note.
