Jamshedpur: The district administration has started the process to install 6,000 street lights at various places across Jamshedpur under a project of the urban development department.
As many as 4,000 lights will be put up in areas under the jurisdiction of Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC). Of these, 2,000 each will be installed in areas under the Jamshedpur west and east assembly segments.
Mango civic body will be installing the remaining 2,000 lights in its areas.
JNAC special officer
Sanjay Kumar said the move of installing 4,000 street lights will help the locals living in the civic body command area.
The idea behind this is to illuminate the roads and alleys in non-Tata Steel command areas. In Tata Steel-command areas, Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Limited provides and maintains the street lights along with other civic amenities.
At present, JNAC under its jurisdiction areas has installed 7,607 street lights.
Often the people living in JNAC areas in Sonari, Kadma, Birsanagar, Baridih and Ramjamnagar complain of inadequate lights in their area.
The process of installation has started in some areas and civic body officials said efforts are on to install more lights before the festival season begins early next month.
Mohan Singh in Sonari said after sunset the road near his house is dark and often criminals take advantage of this and consume alcohol, park their vehicles illegally and pass comments on girls.
Kanhaiya Lal of Baridih bustee echoed similar sentiments and hoped the lights are installed before Durga puja.
