LUCKNOW: Leader of opposition and Samajwadi Party chief
Akhilesh Yadav while welcoming speaker Satish Mahana’s initiative to allow only women MLAs to speak at least for a day on Thursday said that leaders should rise above party politics and work towards stopping crime against women in the state.
Neither a day nor a session will suffice if discussions around women issues are initiated, Akhilesh said and added that incidents happening with women in the state do not reflect a decent society.
“Today, I am not here to criticise the government on women issues but taking names of some places such as Hathras and Lakhimpur Kheri reminds us of the incidents that have taken place there,” Akhilesh said.
The SP chief was, however, quick to add that he was not raising questions over the ruling government since many incidents took place even when Samajwadi Party was in power. “But it’s time leaders rise above party politics and come out with positive results to curb crime against women,” Akhilesh said.
Akhilesh suggested that Women Power Line 1090 should be technologically upgraded and women should be allowed to lodge FIRs through WhatsApp and email. Along with this, he also suggested that response time of ambulances should be improved for effective results.
