Moral policing alleged after man assaults four students

Thiruvananthapuram: In yet another incident of ‘moral policing’, four Class IX students, three girls and a boy, were assaulted using a stick by a man at Vellanikkal Para viewpoint at Pothencode a couple of days ago.
The video of a man assaulting the students went viral on the social media on Wednesday after the person who shot the video released it online following police apathy in arresting the accused after charging strong sections of IPC.
Manesh, 30, a resident of Sreenarayanapuram at Pothencode, was taken into custody on September 4 on a complaint filed by the parents of the children. However, he was released on station bail hours later after charging him under bailable sections of IPC 294 (B) for uttering obscene words, 341 for wrongful restraint and 322 for voluntarily causing hurt.
The children were the students of Lakshmi Vilasam High School, Ariyottukonam, and they came to the house of their friend at Pothencode to celebrate Onam. After lunch, they reached Vellanikkal para and were stopped by Manesh.
An unidentified person who passed by the area in a two-wheeler questioned it and stopped the man from assaulting them. He shot everything on mobile and later informed police about the incident. He also encouraged the students to register a complaint. The accused left the spot when the police were informed but he was taken into custody after the police identified him from the video.
Police said the accused will be charged with more sections of IPC if needed.
Man held for murder attempt
Thiruvananthapuram: Neyyar dam police arrested a man who created a ruckus during a burial on Wednesday. The arrested person was identified as Nujum, 42. The incident happened at Vallimangalam near Kuttichal at 2pm on Monday. Nujum raised an issue regarding widening of access road to the house just before the burial of one Mohammad Ibrahim. During the ruckus, he assaulted Tahir, son Ibrahim, using a hydraulic pipe.
