External affairs minister S Jaishankar discussed the Cyprus issue with Turkey's Mevlut Cavusoglu, hours after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raked up Kashmir in his address to the UNGA.
Jaishankar met Cavusoglu on the second day of his engagements on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York.
Meanwhile, at the UNGA, French President Emmanuel Macron said, "Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, was right when he said the time is not for war." However, he did not describe it as an attempt by the Indian PM to assail the Russian President unlike the commentaries in the Western media that described that Modi pulled up Vladimir Putin in Samarkand.
"Narendra Modi, prime minister of India, was right when he said that this is not the time of war. Neither is it for revenge against the West, nor opposing the West versus the rest. It is a time for our sovereign and equal countries to face the challenges of our times together. That is why it is urgent to build a new compact between North and South, a compact that is effective and works for food security, for climate, for biodiversity, for education. This is no longer a time for a logic of blocs, but a time for building coalitions of concrete actions to reconcile legitimate interests and global goods," Macron said.
Later, Jaishankar attended a dinner organised by Macron in New York.
The crisis in Cyprus began in 1974 when Turkey invaded and then occupied the northern part of the country in response to a military coup on the island which was backed by the Greek government. India has been advocating a peaceful resolution of the issue in accordance with the UN resolutions. Cyprus has been a steadfast supporter of India on the Kashmir issue for over five decades.
