Berhampur: The water resources department decided to release water from the Harabhangi dam at Adava in Gajapati on Monday in view of the IMD forecast of more heavy rainfall in the district
“After a significant amount of rainfall on Sunday — 190 mm — close to the dam site, the water level is at 94%. If the catchment area gets more rainfall, the dam’s water level will rise further. Hence, we decided to release water from the dam,” said Rajib Pandit, superintendent engineer, Harabhangi irrigation division.
“The Harabhangi dam has an 8,625 hecta metre capacity near Adava. We want the water level to drop to about 84% of its capacity so that it can store more in the event of a downpour. We have already cautioned people in the lower catchment areas about the situation and advised them not to go near the river under any circumstance,” Pandit added.
Meanwhile, the Gajapati administration has alerted the block development officers and tehsildars to prepare for any eventuality in case of heavy rain. “We have alerted all BDOs, tehsildars and other officers about the possibility of heavy rainfall and have asked them to be prepared,” said Sangram Panda, additional district magistrate, Gajapati.
