Thiruvananthapuram: With the governor reiterating that he would not sign the Universities Act Amendment Bill and Lok Ayukta Amendment Bill, the fate of the Bills has become unpredictable.
In his press conference on Monday, the governor made it clear that he would not sign either of the Bills, as he will not allow illegalities to be committed at his cost.
Khan said that neither would he allow compromising the autonomy of the universities nor would he allow anyone to be a judge in his own cause. “They want to commit illegalities. I am not going to legalize their illegalities,” the governor said, adding that he has not seen the Bills yet.
Citing the case of Sree Narayana Open University, the governor said it was also created through an ordinance when the ordinances are meant to be used only for emergencies.
The governor also said his relationship with the government would become smooth and cordial if he signed both Bills.
However, the governor had earlier signed the ordinance amending the Lok Ayukta Act, despite the opposition delegation, led by opposition leader VD Satheesan, having approached him requesting him not to sign it.
