
India Weather Highlights: The southwest monsoon Tuesday withdrew from parts of southwest Rajasthan and Kutch, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. Since 2020, the normal date considered for the start of the monsoon withdrawal is September 17. It is for the first time since 2016 when the monsoon has withdrawn in the third week of September (see box), the IMD added.
The state disaster response force on Wednesday rescued 42 Adi Kailash pilgrims who were got stranded near Tawaghat on their way back from the pilgrimage following road blockages caused by heavy rainfall. The pilgrims are mostly from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, the official said. Apart from the pilgrims, 50 villagers from Vyas Valley were also rescued with the help of helicopters after remaining stranded for four days in Gunji due to disruptions caused by heavy rainfall.
Widespread downpour and thunderstorm are expected across coastal Odisha till Wednesday, under the influence of a low pressure area formed over Bay of Bengal. Heavy rainfall is also predicted over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on Tuesday.

"We were informed on September 19 that some Adi Kailash pilgrims were stranded on the way to Bundi. An SDRF team rescued the stranded pilgrims safely and escorted them to Dharchula via an alternative route," Pithoragarh District Magistrate Ashish Chauhan said.
The pilgrims are mostly from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi, the official said.

A 65-year-old woman died in a village in Fatehpur on Wednesday when a wall of her kutcha house collapsed on her, police said.
Station House Officer (SHO) of the local Khaga police station Jai Prakash Shahi said the wall collapsed following rainfall in the area. The victim was identified as Moonga Devi of Kahi village. (PTI)
Many parts of Rajasthan received light to heavy rainfall and the precipitation is expected to continue for the next three days in the state, the meteorological department said on Wednesday.
The highest rainfall of 88 mm was recorded in Ghatol in Banswara district, it said.
Heavy rain is likely at many places of Rajasthan in the next three days due to the low pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal, a MeT department spokesperson said. (PTI)
A heavy rainfall warning has been issued for several western and interior districts of Odisha till Thursday morning.
The coastal and southern regions of the state had experienced heavy rain induced by the formation of low pressure for two consecutive days.
“Heavy rainfall very likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Nuapada, Bolangir, Bargarh, Jharsuguda and Sundargarh,” the IMD said in its forecast.
Meanwhile, an intense spell of rain continued in Bhubaneswar, along with western and interior parts of the state, on Wednesday. (PTI)

The weather office has forecast a few more spells of rain in the next two-three days before the withdrawal of monsoon from the National Capital Region.
A few areas in west, central, north, northwest, south and southeast Delhi recorded light to moderate rainfall. More rain is likely during the day.

After Delhi saw a ‘good’ air day on September 16, the air quality index (AQI) has deteriorated. The 24-hour average AQI, according to the Central Pollution Control Board’s 4 pm bulletin, was 182 on Monday, pushing the air quality under the ‘moderate’ category.
The index between 101 and 200 is considered to be ‘moderate’. The AQI in the ‘good’ range (up to 50) has minimal impact on health, while that in the ‘moderate’ range can cause breathing discomfort to people with asthma or lung and heart diseases. Read More.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast light rain and generally cloudy sky in the national capital over the next five days. Parts of Delhi-NCR witnessed light to moderate rainfall on Tuesday, leading to waterlogged roads and traffic jams in several areas.
While the maximum temperature settled at 34.7 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature was recorded at 24.6 degrees Celsius. The relative humidity at 5.30 pm was recorded at 73 per cent, according to data shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The weather office has forecast the minimum and maximum temperatures on Wednesday settling at 24 degrees Celsius and 32 degrees Celsius, respectively. (PTI)

Q Does the UAE, which has a sizable number of Indian expats in its labour force, sees greater participation of qualified Indians in combating global warming?
Indian experts are already actively participating in combating climate change in the UAE. They have played an integral role in our international climate negotiations as well as in developing the National Climate Change Plan of the UAE 2017-2050, the National Climate Change Adaptation Program, and other strategic documents. People with qualifications in a wide variety of fields can make meaningful contributions to our fight against climate change.
"Loss and damage" due to climate change will be a major topic for discussion at the 27th Conference of Parties to the UNFCCC in Egypt in November, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said on Tuesday.
Addressing an event organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry here, he said the maximum impact of the climate crisis is being borne by the countries which have no role in global warming.
"Loss and damage will be a major topic for discussion at COP27 at Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt in November this year," he said. The social and financial impacts of climate change that cannot be avoided are referred to as 'loss and damage'. (PTI)
Light to moderate showers are expected for the next four-five days in some areas of Bharatpur, Jaipur, Kota and Udaipur divisions of east Rajasthan, Meteorological Department said here on Tuesday. However, the monsoon has receded from some parts of Jodhpur and Bikaner divisions today, it said.
According to MeT office, another low pressure area remains over the Bay of Bengal and Odisha coast, which is very likely to move in a west-northwest direction towards Odisha and North Chhattisgarh in the next 48 hours.
Under the influence of this system, there is a strong possibility of light to moderate rain with thunder in some parts of Bharatpur, Jaipur, Kota and Udaipur divisions of East Rajasthan for the next four-five days, it said. (PTI)
Normal life was disrupted in many parts of Odisha on Tuesday by incessant rains induced by a low pressure and the weatherman has forecast more downpour in the next 24 hours.
The low pressure area is active in northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coasts with associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 5.8 km, the IMD said.
The low pressure has activated the monsoon and Odisha as a whole has received an average rainfall of 22.7 mm against the normal of 6.9 mm, which is 228 per cent excess, the Regional Meteorological Centre said. (PTI)
