Puja committee does its bit for society
The Old Station Bazaar Sarbajanin Durga puja committee on the Cuttack-Puri road is not only about pomp and grandeur. From being ready to help people in distress during any disaster to extending financial help to arrange marriages for underprivileged girls, it has taken up social work seriously.
“We have also made sure that we selflessly do our bit for society,” said Ganesh Prasad Sahu, president of the puja committee. To maintain social harmony in the locality, the committee also celebrates other festivals like Raja, Ganesh puja, Viswakarma puja, Janmastami and Shivratri with equal zeal and enthusiasm.
Women empowerment being a special focus of the committee, the women members actively take part in the Durga puja and also other social activities throughout the year.
“Starting from rescuing mentally ill persons from the roadside to providing medical help and financial support, the puja committee members always stand for the poor and the needy. The members of women self-help groups in the locality have been involved in several activities like helping the physically and mentally challenged persons and senior citizens in the area,” said Jyotshna Das, a member of the committee.
During disasters like cyclones and floods, the members of the puja committee not only donate to the Chief Ministers Relief Fund but also come forward to help the affected people by distributing relief materials.
