Students protest at Chandigarh University in Mohali on Sunday. (Express Photo: Jasbir Malhi)Students at Chandigarh University early Monday ended their protest, which erupted after allegations that a woman student leaked some objectionable videos of fellow students, said the police.
Kharar (I) Deputy Superintendent of Police Rupinder Kaur Sohi confirmed to The Indian Express that the protest has ended after the district and university administrations assured them that their demand for a fair probe will be fulfilled. The protest ended at around 2 am and the students vacated the protest site by 3.30 am.
Meanwhile, many students left for their homes as the university was closed. According to an official order by Chandigarh University, teaching was suspended at the university from September 19 to 24.
“We are going home as our parents have panicked quite a bit from the happenings here. The university anyway has decided to stay shut for a week,” a first year graduation student said on Monday.
Another student, accompanying her, said that they got the notice about the classes being suspended on Monday morning.
The massive protest was held by students at the campus Sunday. The students demanded a fair probe and questioned the university authorities’ claims that the accused woman did not film any other girl, without a forensic report.
Chandigarh University authorities could not be contacted for a comment on the demands accepted by the administration.
The university has also suspended the two wardens of the Le Corbusier hostel at the centre of the objectionable video controversy. The protesting students had been demanding action against the wardens for not reacting promptly to the complaint given by six girls staying at the hostel who suspected that they were being filmed by the accused student.
A S Kang, Dean of Student Welfare, Chandigarh University, had said Sunday the accused woman did not film any other student. Late at night, the police arrested two people from Himachal Pradesh.
The students had been demanding a copy of the FIR, the women students who were taken to the hospital be produced before them, and also raised questions over the working of hostel wardens.
