Four students from the College of Agriculture, Haveri, bagged Rs 10 lakh cash prize for developing an alternative to coco peat used in seedling to beat the steep logistics cost. A student from the College of Technology in Salem bagged Rs 5 lakh for developing electric cylinder for jacquard machine in the textiles sector and four students from the College of Agriculture, UAS, Dharwad, got Rs 4 lakh for producing poultry feed for broilers and layers using silkworm pupae.

The FKCCI on Sunday announced names of teams that bagged top honours at its flagship Manthan programme, which identifies winning ideas and encourages them with cash rewards and enables seed funding support.

Four students from the College of Agriculture, Haveri, bagged Rs 10 lakh cash prize for developing an alternative to coco peat used in seedling to beat the steep logistics cost. A student from the College of Technology in Salem bagged Rs 5 lakh for developing electric cylinder for jacquard machine in the textiles sector and four students from the College of Agriculture, UAS, Dharwad, got Rs 4 lakh for producing poultry feed for broilers and layers using silkworm pupae.

FKCCI president CA IS Prasad announced the names of winners at the grand finale of Manthan in Bengaluru on Sunday. Manthan is an annual business plan presentation competition which the FKCCI instituted in 2009 to encourage the youth to become entrepreneurs.

The students who bagged the prizes are S Shamanth , Harshith S, Parvati S Kudla & Prakasha TA from the College of Agriculture, Haveri, Nishanth S from the College of Technology, Salem and Mahaveer Dhareppanavar, Mahammad Rafeek N Nadaf, Pallvai S B& Sahana Yaragatti from the College of Agriculture, UAS, Dharwad.

Apart from the cash prizes, the best business plans are entitled to seed money support of up to Rs 10 crore from Udaan, New Horizon College of Engineering and up to Rs 2 crore from AIC NITTE Incubation Centre.

There were six prizes in all. The winning ideas and teams were decided by a grand jury led by Karnataka Startup Vision Group chairman Prashanth Prakash. "An increasing number of our start-ups in India are from tier two and three cities, Manthan's focus on nurturing entrepreneurships beyond Urban India is very commendable," Prakash, who is also the founding partner at the venture fund Accel told ET.

The Grand Jury, he said, picked six innovative start-ups that focus on solutions for climate tech, agri and rural economy. "Karnataka’s vision has been to nurture very early stage start-ups Beyond Bengaluru, Manthan will further catalyze the mentoring and incubation ecosystem across southern India," he said.
