Prez Murmu to be feted in Hubballi on Sept 26
Dharwad: President of India Droupadi Murmu will visit Hubballi city on September 26 to receive the civic felicitation organised by Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC). Mayor Iresh Anchatgeri said on Friday that HDMC had extended an invitation appealing to the First Citizen of country to visit the twin cities of Hubballi and Dharwad during her visit to the state on September 26. Union parliamentary affairs minister Pralhad Joshi had persuaded Murmu to visit the twin cities and receive the civic felicitation. The programme will be held at Karnataka Gymkhana Grounds located at Deshpande Nagar here. Seating arrangements will be made for 5,000 persons at the venue, said Iresh. On Friday, the mayor, Joshi and other district BJP functionaries visited the grounds and inspected the facilities. Hubballi-Dharwad police commissioner Labhu Ram, DC Gurudatt Hegde and other officials too were present. On Saturday, DC Gurudatt Hegde chaired a meeting of officials to discuss and finalise the arrangements to be made for the President’s visit. The President will inaugurate th new building of IIIT at Sattur here, he added.
Privatisation of gramin banks

Hubballi: All Karnataka Gramin Bank Employees’ Federation has called for a daylong national strike against the privatisation of regional gramin banks on September 23. Secretary-general Venkateshwar Reddy told reporters here on Saturday that regional rural banks, started in 1976, have effectively handled the rural credit system by providing credit facilities to small farmers, micro farmers, rural artisans and small entrepreneurs. “There are 43 regional gramin banks in the country with 22,300 branches, of which 17 state-level are gramin banks. These banks have served 40 crore customers till March 31, 2022, with more than 5.62 lakh crore rural deposits and 3.62 lakh crore advances. But the central government suddenly started privatising the shares of gramin banks, which is not correct,” he said, and added that their union is fighting against this. In this direction, a national seminar will be held on the role of RRBs in rural credit-delivery system on September 18 at RN Shetty Kalyan Mantapa here.
Wife-killer gets death sentence
Bagalkot: The district court has given death punishment to a person who had brutally murdered his wife, then a lactating mother, to death for not obliging his sex demand, on Friday. Judge Sayyed Rehman, who conducted the trial of the case, has also ordered compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the children of the couple and also fined him Rs 1 lakh. Ramappa Vaddar, a resident of Ilkal in the district, had forced his wife Jijabai to have sex. When she denied, he brutally murdered her by attacking her lower abdomen with a stick on June 13, 2016. A case was registered at Ilkal police station.
Farmer dies while working in field
Gadag: A farmer collapsed at his agriculture field and died as he could not get a vehicle facility due to the worst condition of roads at Hallikeri village on Friday. Villagers said Kariyappa Goudar, 68, was working at the field when he collapsed in the afternoon. “Farmers working in nearby fields rushed to help him. Though they called in some vehicles, none of them could reach the field as all the roads were not motorable due to recent rain. Goudar breathed his last before alternative arrangements were made,” they said, adding they brought the body to the village and cremated it on Friday. However, no case was registered with Mundargi police.
India’s contribution to maths hailed
Dharwad: Mathematics has a history of over 3,000 years and India’s contribution to mathematics in incredible, said Union minister for parliamentary affairs Prahlad Joshi. Inaugurating the two-day Math Fair organised by Karsh Jnan Foundation on the occasion of 72nd birth day of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Karnatak High School here on Saturday, he said Vedas and Puranas have reference to mathss and solutions to problems of maths have been found through Vedic means. “Many students feel maths is a difficult subject. But proper teaching at the initial stages will create interest among students about the subject and make it easy to learn,” Joshi said. He hailed Karsh Foundation for taking up the initiative to make learning of maths easy through Vedic means and interesting games. He called upon the organisers to conduct the fair every year in a more systematic way and announced that he would sponsor cash prizes for the winners of the competitions. Foundation founder Sumangala Dandewale said the fair aims at making maths an attractive subject through easy and funny learning methods. Hundreds of students from urban and rural parts of Dharwad have participated in the fair.
Joshi on Modi birthday activities
Hubballi: People are voluntarily celebrating Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday across the country and the people of Hubballi-Dharwad too are not falling behind in the celebration, said Union minister Pralhad Joshi. Speaking to reporters here on the sidelines of Seva Programme organised to mark Modi’s birthday, Joshi said he was astonished to see service-oriented celebrations in the twin cities. “Apart from social service activities, KE Board School in Dharwad has organised a Maths Fair to mark the occasion. When we visited there, children were found enthusiastic about Modi and his works. The celebration will go on for a fortnight in the country. Blood donation camps organised to mark Modi’s birthday will enter ‘Guinness Book of Records’. College students are also coming forward to serve society in the name of Modi, while elders are wishing a long life for Modi,” he added.
Rare expo on Shakespeare today
Dharwad: Karnataka State Higher Education Academy will is organise a rare exhibition titled ‘Famous Beyond Words’ in honour of William Shakespeare, collected by a retired English professor S N Balajee on Sunday at Karnataka State Higher Education Academy, Golden Jubilee building, Karnatak University campus here. Prof Baljee is fondly called as the ‘Shakespearewallah of Mysore’. Karnatak University vice-chancellro K B Gudasi will inaugurate the exhibition. The exhibition will showcase uncommon memorabilia and artefacts on the Bard of Avon, like, a rare statue of Shylock from London, posters featuring world’s greatest Shakespearean actors like Laurence Oliver, Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando and others. It will also include unique collections of Shakespeare’s work, translations, quotable quotes, playing cards, encyclopaedia, badges and vintage tickets among others. KSHEA directpr S M Shivaprasad said the exhibition is open to the public on Sunday between 9am to 6pm.
