MUMBAI: Doctors at civic-run V N Desai Hospital in
Santacruz recently removed a football-sized mass of multiple uterine fibroids, weighing about 5kg, from a 42-year-old woman.
The patient had abdominal pain, bloating and heaviness for the last six months and sought help only when she was unable to do her daily work. Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during childbearing years.
In a press release, the V N Desai Hospital doctors said that the woman had to undergo a total hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) as well. "Broad ligament fibroids are uncommon with a reported incidence of less than 1% and have the potential to grow into a large size," said senior gynaecologist Dr Komal Chavan.
"Such a huge mass is the result of lack of knowledge, and women should undergo routine examinations periodically," the doctor added. The operation was done with minimal cuts on September 7, and the patient was discharged after a week, the doctor added.
