‘A day with the Police’: Coimbatore police teach girl students how to shoot targets
COIMBATORE: As part of the 'A day with the Police’ programme, 30 girl students from Theethipalayam government higher secondary school visited the district police office and interacted with senior police officers in Coimbatore on Friday.
Later, they visited the rural armed reserve police office at the Police Recruit School (PRS) premises where weapons were displayed and R Sudhakar, inspector general of police, MS Muthusamy, deputy inspector general of police (Coimbatore range) and V Badrinarayanan, superintendent of police, Coimbatore district explained the students about various types of weapons used by the police.

The students got an opportunity to interact with the IGP Sudhakar, DIG Muthusamy, SP Badrinarayanan and other police officers.

SP Badrinarayanan explained the students the functioning of the police and the roles of the police from the rank of constables to the chief of the police force.

IGP Sudhakar said that a day with the police programme was started as an extension of Project Pallikoodam. The police personnel who are working under the project pallikoodam reached out to around 1 lakh students in the Coimbatore district and conducted awareness classes.
“Project Pallikoodam is a part to create awareness among the school students about the sexual assaults, good touch and bad touch, how to contact the women help desk officers if the students are sexually harassed by anyone. The extension part is a day with the police, offering the school children a chance to get to know about the police force. The students are interacting with the police officers and it will help to build confidence among the students and they will come out to approach the police without any hesitation if they face any issues," said Sudhakar.
He also added that the session of a day with police will be conducted with school students every Friday.
The students visited the chamber of the SP and later, they visited the children's traffic park where they were taught about the traffic rules and regulations.
Later, they visited the rural armed reserve police office building where all types of guns from rifles to modern weapons were displayed. The safety gear used by the police during the dispersal of mobs or violence was also displayed.
The senior police officers explained the usage and function of the weapons and showed the magazine to the students.
The 30 girl students were taken to the Coimbatore rifle club on PRS premises where they were taught how to shoot targets. They were given air rifles and each student shot three rounds.
