COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore city police arrested a man on Friday night for murdering an elderly woman at Neelikonampalayam in Coimbatore a week ago.
The arrested man has been identified as T Selvam, 46, of Jakkampatti in Theni district. He was unmarried and residing in a room belonging to R Mayilathal, 77, of Anna Nagar at Neelikonampalayam on rent. He was working as a cook in an eatery at Varadharajapuram in the city.
On September 9, he went to the house under the influence of alcohol. Mayilathal scolded him. In a fit of rage, he strangled her with a wire and escaped from the house. He did not steal anything from the house.
Police recovered the partially decomposed body of Mayilathal on September 11.
Singanallur police inspector R Vinothkumar and team nabbed Selvam from Chennai city on Friday night and brought him to Coimbatore on Saturday morning. He was remanded in judicial custody.
