Coimbatore: After announcing plans to set up 100 Miyawaki forests to increase the city’s green space, the municipal corporation has decided to develop 20 more forests using the method.
Eighty of the 100 proposed forests have been planted, corporation commissioner M Prathap said. “While works are under way at the other 20 places, we recently decided to add 20 more forests. Representatives of residential areas approached the NGOs and officials involved in the work and expressed their desire to contribute to increase greenery,” he said.
The initiative also helps to secure open space reservation lands that were retrieved after removing encroachments. “Almost 50% of the places chosen for Miyawaki forests are OSR lands, which were retrieved in recent months. We retrieve at least two OSR lands every week,” he said.
The works to develop Miyawaki forests were inaugurated by municipal administration minister K N Nehru at Hudco Colony in Peelamedu a month ago. TNN
