GUWAHATI: Traffic rule violations, including drink driving, during Durga Puja in Guwahati may attract immediate suspension of driving license along with a penalty of up to Rs 10,000, the transport department said on Friday.
Kamrup (Metro) district transport officer Gautam Das, while talking to media after a meeting with the district administration and other stakeholders here on Friday, said, “Traffic rules will be strictly enforced in the city during the Pujas in a bid to prevent fatal road accidents.”
He said teams comprising officials from the transport, traffic police departments as well as the district administration will tour the the city to make sure that the rules are enforced. He also appealed to the people to click photos of vehicles if they see anyone driving/riding without a seat belt/helmet and share the same with the traffic police or the transport department. “The drive against drink driving will be enforced strictly as we have seen in the past that it is one of the major causes of fatal road accidents,” he added. Driving on the wrong side of the road, jumping signals, illegal parking and three persons on a two-wheeler will also attract a penalty.
