Noting that they are trying to “aim at an unknown target in the darkness” with an “intention to delay the trial”, a Delhi court dismissed two separate applications filed by multiple accused in the Northeast Delhi riots that sought production of documents which police may have relied on but withheld in their chargesheet since it allegedly favoured the accused.
The applications moved by activists Gulfisha Fatima, Devangana Kalita and seven others sought copies of documents collected by police in a murder case of a bystander, Arman. Five other accused persons, including United Against Hate founder Khalid Saifi, had moved similar applications in connection with the violence, which took place at the Khureji anti-CAA protest site.
Metropolitan Magistrate Abhinav Pandey observed, “Even if there is an allegation regarding documents being collected by the prosecution which favour the accused and, therefore, are not relied upon by the prosecution, they shall not be considered necessary and desirable to be produced at the stage before framing of charge.”

The Delhi High Court has dismissed a plea by a 2006 Mumbai train bombings case convict against a Central Information Commission (CIC) order denying disclosure of information pertaining to the sanction granted for his prosecution under UAPA by the Maharashtra government.
Justice Yashwant Varma said the petition lacked merit and endorsed the CIC's view that such information was exempted from disclosure under the Right to Information (RTI) Act. The court observed petitioner Ehtesham Qutubuddin Siddique, a death row convict in the case under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA), failed to establish that some of the information sought was “severable” and fell outside the scope of the exemption under the law.
On July 11, 2006, seven explosions had ripped through seven western line local trains in Mumbai, leading to the death of 189 people and injuring 829. (PTI)

The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) Thursday hit out at the Aam Aadmi Party-led government in Delhi once again over the now-scrapped excise policy. Through a purported “sting” video, the BJP showed a person linked to liquor trade, who claimed that the Delhi government deliberately kept smaller players out of its “tailor-made” excise policy. (Arvind) Kejriwal has no moral right to continue as chief minister, the party said.
The person featuring in the sting is an accused in the case registered by the CBI to probe the alleged corruption linked to the policy, the BJP said.
BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the AAP government tried to ensure that only a few persons control the cash flow related to trade. Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta alleged that it was done for corruption.
This money was used for the polls in Goa and Punjab, Trivedi alleged.
He noted that Kejriwal used to tell people to do a sting on those seeking money illegally from them and he will act against the culprits. (PTI)
