SCO Summit live updates: PM Modi leaves for SCO Summit in Uzbekistan
The SCO is a major trans-regional organisation spanning South and Central Asia. The 22nd Summit of the Council of Heads of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Member States is set to take place in the historical city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan from September 15 to 16. Russia's President Vladimir Putin told Chinese leader Xi Jinping on Thursday that Moscow backs Beijing's "One China" policy, opposes "provocations" by the United States in the Taiwan Strait, and said Russia values China's "balanced position" on Ukraine. The two leaders were meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Uzbekistan in their first face-to-face meeting since Russia launched its "special military operation" in Ukraine in February.
The Summit coincides with a sharp rise in Indian imports of Russian oil, coal and fertiliser, a vital outlet for Moscow as it seeks to secure new markets after Western sanctions were imposed following the invasion of Ukraine.
India, Russia to discuss energy security as oil, coal trade soars
India and other members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) will discuss energy security at the regional security bloc's meeting in Uzbekistan, India's foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra said on Thursday.
