Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Friday alleged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) were “unnecessarily troubling everyone”, and that he still did not know what the liquor scam was all about. Addressing a press conference, Kejriwal said the Lieutenant Governor, CBI and BJP have quoted varying amounts of money involved in the alleged liquor scam, but he didn’t understand what it was really about. “One of their (BJP) leaders says it is a scam of Rs 8,000 crore, the LG says it is a scam of Rs 144 crore and the CBI FIR says there is a scam of Rs 1 crore. I don’t understand what the liquor scam is,” Kejriwal said.

Delhi records first ‘good’ air day of year, AQI at 47

On Friday, Delhi recorded its first ‘good’ air quality day this year, with an AQI of 47.

With intermittent rainfall over the day and strong winds, the AQI improved from 57, in the ‘satisfactory’ category on Thursday. The AQI has been in the ‘satisfactory’ category from September 11 onwards. AQI up to 50 is considered ‘good’, while AQI from 51 to 100 falls under ‘satisfactory’. ‘Good’ AQI has minimal impact on health, while ‘satisfactory’ AQI may cause “minor breathing discomfort to sensitive people”, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Delhi recorded a single ‘good’ air quality day last year when delayed withdrawal of the monsoon and western disturbances brought rainfall to the city in October. In 2020, there were five days with AQI in the ‘good’ range, and the city saw two such days in 2019. (Read more)

Court junks pleas of multiple accused in Delhi riots cases: ‘Intention to delay the trial’

Noting that they are trying to “aim at an unknown target in the darkness” with an “intention to delay the trial”, a Delhi court dismissed two separate applications filed by multiple accused in the Northeast Delhi riots that sought production of documents which police may have relied on but withheld in their chargesheet since it allegedly favoured the accused.

The applications moved by activists Gulfisha Fatima, Devangana Kalita and seven others sought copies of documents collected by police in a murder case of a bystander, Arman. Five other accused persons, including United Against Hate founder Khalid Saifi, had moved similar applications in connection with the violence, which took place at the Khureji anti-CAA protest site.

Metropolitan Magistrate Abhinav Pandey observed, “Even if there is an allegation regarding documents being collected by the prosecution which favour the accused and, therefore, are not relied upon by the prosecution, they shall not be considered necessary and desirable to be produced at the stage before framing of charge.”
