LUDHIANA: An unemployed man, who was also a habitual drinker, pushed his 2-year-old son into a canal near Bhaini Sahib area, but junked his suicide plan later as he couldn't muster the courage to jump into the water body. The child's body hasn't been traced yet.
The accused, Bhupinder Singh of Manyurwal Bet in Kapurthala, confessed about the crime following his arrest. After being sent to police remand for a day, Bhupinder has now been sent to judicial custody.
Koom Kalan police arrested Bhupinder. The incident had occured on September 1. Police said Bhupinder had got married Harjeet Kaur of Bhaini Sahib after a love affair and lived with his in-laws at their place. They said the wife had her own boutique.
Cops said the accused did not work and would fight with his wife frequently after coming home drunk. Her relatives used to allegedly insult him.
Police officials said on September 1, the accused consumed alcohol for several hours and then took along his 2-year-old son Gurkeerat with an intention to commit suicide. They said the accused pushed his son into the canal on Gurthali bridge, but he couldn't muster courage to jump into the canal.
Cops said following the disappearance of Bhupinder and son, Harjeet lodged a complaint with Koom Kalan police. The police registered a case of kidnapping and started search.
Police said the next day, Harjeet expressed doubts on her husband, after which the police started looking for him. They said the police later apprehended him from the bus stand in Koom Kalan. During interrogation, he confessed to have committed the crime.
Sub Inspector Kulbir Singh, SHO, Koom Kalan police station, said the accused was arrested on Monday and after one day remand, he was produced before a local court which sent him to judicial custody. Police officials said efforts were on to trace the body of the child.
