CHENNAI: Customs officials at Chennai airport secured a man who tried to smuggle
gold after making a belt buckle with it.
Customs officials said the man, identified as Murugan Govindaraju, arrived in a flight from Dubai on Monday. He was intercepted by the customs officials on suspicion.
Three gold bars he had hidden in his trousers were seized and examination revealed that his belt buckle was made of gold. The total seizure was 580 gram valued at Rs 25.99 lakh.
On the same day, a gold chain, weighing 220 gram and valued Rs 9.85 lakh, was found concealed in the front lavatory of another flight that arrived from Dubai. It was seized.
