Bengal govt has crossed all levels of brutality: BJP

NEW DELHI: BJP on Wednesday said the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal has crossed all limits of brutality, repression and police torture to deny its party workers of their political right to raise their voice in a democratic and peaceful manner.
Senior BJP member Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “Mamata ji, all your reactions in West Bengal are contrary to your personal evolution and suffering. This is not your normal behaviour. It seems you are doing all this to divert attention from internal bickering in your party.” He alleged that the state had become a “lawless” and “bankrupt” state under TMC government.
A day after police and BJP workers clashed after cops prevented them from marching towards the state secretariat (Nabanna) in Kolkata during their protests, the party hit out at Banerjee for inflicting “police torture” on its members to suppress their voice. BJP had organised a protest march against TMC’s alleged corrupt practices.
Prasad slammed Banerjee, saying she speaks of saving democracy outside the state while crossing all limits to curb people’s democratic and civil rights inside Bengal.
Suggesting that intra-party rivalry within TMC may be behind the use of force against BJP members, Prasad said the CM’s conduct has been “contrary” to her political evolution, noting her rise from the grassroots and long struggle against the earlier Left rule. “Is the fight for succession going on in TMC”, he asked, hinting about the reported differences between the chief minister and her nephew Abhishek, without naming him. Banerjee has now left the Left behind in inflicting atrocities and brutalities on BJP, he claimed.
While BJP alleged the Mamata government didn’t want to give space to opposition parties, TMC described saffron camp workers as “hooligans”.
