The stone inscription speaks of a donation made to an annadhanam mutt near Dindigul
CHENNAI: A 400-year-old stone inscription which speaks of a donation made to a mutt providing free meals was discovered by the members of the Dindigul Varalatru Aiyvu Kuzhu recently.
Coordinator of the committee, N T Visvanathadas and member Rathina Muralidhar, said the inscription dating back to 1649 CE, speaks about Muthulingaya Naicker, son of Thonthi Lingaya Naicker, a leader of the yadava community donating a large portion of land on the fifth day of the month of Karthigai to the Velanpatti annadhana mutt. The land donated belonged to Pallapatti near Natham in Dindigul. All boundaries of the land are clearly specified in the stone inscription.
It also names the person who would administer this land as Ashta Boga Desa Swamigal. The person who damages the inscription or the mutt, will be cursed, the inscription ends. This dilapidated mutt still stands in the village , said Muralidhar.
