LUDHIANA: A 34-year-old home tutor won applause on social media when a CCTV camera footage of her fighting off a snatcher went viral. In the clip, the accused was seen dragging her for a few meters. However, the woman held on to him and left only after he let go of her gold chain.
Meenu, 34, a home tutor from Khanna’s Bank Colony, said that on Monday afternoon, she was on her way back home after picking up her 7-year-old daughter from school on her scooter. She said when she reached the house and was parking the scooter, two men on a motorcycle came up and the pillion rider snatched her gold chain.
“I held the snatcher immediately after he pulled my gold chain. His accomplice drove the bike but I did not lose my grip. Also, I threatened the snatcher that he would get beaten up if he did not leave my chain. The pillion rider fell off the bike but even then I did not leave him. Then he realised that he could be caught as people had started rushing out of their houses on hearing the noise. Thereafter, he said he threw the gold chain and escaped with his accomplice,” said Meenu.
The woman added, “I was not thinking about the cost of the chain. I was furious that someone could dare target me right outside my house. We go around in the city and we cannot look for others to help us in trouble. We have to fight for ourselves. I am sure that those snatchers will not dare to execute another snatching for at least 15 days.”
Khanna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Dayama Harish Kumar Om Prakash said that he would call the woman to his office to honour her for her bravery.
