Goa BJP chief Sadanand Shet Tanavade on Wednesday said eight Congress MLAs from the state are all set to join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

The switch will leave Congress with just 3 MLAs in the state, and the opposition benches further depleted to only 5 members.

The MLAs who will be switching the party include Digambar Kamat, Michael Lobo, Delilah Lobo, Rajesh Faldesai, Kedar Naik, Sankalp Amonkar, Aleixo Sequeira and Rudolf Fernandes.

Digambar Kamat was the former Congress Chief Minister of Goa. Kamat had led the party campaign in the state elections earlier this year. He was also accussed by the Congress unit in Goa of trying to split the party earlier

27 MLAs in the 40-member house switched sides in the last assembly, with Congress taking the biggest hit- 16 of its 17 legislators ditching the party.

Ten Congress MLAs joined BJP in 2019 itself, including the then leader of opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar. Another three joined the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress.

In the 40-member Goa Assembly, the Congress has 11 legislators and the BJP has 20.

This year's election in the coastal state was a tight contest between the BJP and Congress. The saffron party contested on all 40 seats while the Congress was in alliance with the Goa Forward Party (GFP).
